Finished Narcos: Mexico - Some Thoughts

2020.09.08 02:32 PopularTradition Finished Narcos: Mexico - Some Thoughts

Not sure what kind of people are on this subreddit and the general biases that exist here. However, I am going to shoot from the hip as usual and write about my uncensored thoughts.
Finished Narcos: Mexico Seasons 1/2:
Pros:
  1. Excellent cinamatography. Compare this to El Dragon and you can see why (still a decent show though).
  2. Strong on the historical accuracy. I enjoyed bits about zooming out and talking about the 80's in general. Comparing the largest coccaine busts to date in Season 2 Ep 9.
  3. Packing some heat and occassional references to gun history like the scene in the elevator with the guns Hitler's guard used.
  4. Realistic deaths.
  5. Showed the brutality of the narco subculture.
  6. Painfully and accurately portrayed the corruption in Mexico from politicians, police, and even the military.
  7. Did better at showing that these are just people that needed to eat (that completely got fat off the money/power) due to ruthless politicians hoarding all the wealth.
  8. Shows how much more money narcotraficantes brought in compared to oil in the 80's. That $4 bil vs the $15 bil USD was scary. Mexico's economy was heavily oil dependent at about 40% of the economey in the 80's.
  9. Diego Luna, José María Yazpik, Fernanda Urrejola, Teresa Ruiz, etc did excellent work.
  10. Shows that the Americans were not just the white saviors they were shown to be in the original Narcos in Colombia.
  11. Flows nicely.
  12. Did better with showing Felix's bad side, but still mostly glorified the dude.
  13. Less American-Centric than Narcos in terms of interpretation. There was a fair amount of fuck ups on the USA side and criticisms of the CIA, FBI shooting up civilians in the pueblo, etc.
  14. Accurately portrayed the corruption in Mexico.
  15. Beautiful country-side shots.
  16. I enjoyed how they showed what part of the country they were in and the map visuals when they could.
  17. Brutally attacked the rich of Mexico with Alexandria Gulimant probably being the only redeeming wealth "fresa" (although she cared more about endangered animals than people which is common among the white power class in the USA as well. Easier to care about environmental issues than socioeconomic ones especially if that threatens your power). Honestly, she was complicit in all of it too though. Maybe her enviornmental care was just virtue signaling.
  18. The top-down authoritarian approach present with the PRI's 90 year dominance (for example) is shown to largely be hurting the people. You need to listen to your employees even if they are not your partners.
  19. It pays to forgive sometimes, but ultimately most solutions are solved with violence in that subculture.
  20. Shows some tensions between Mexicans/Mexican-Americans with Kiki that could have been fleshed out more. I guess it is fair they would not send a Mexican-American who could not speak Spanish well, but would send a white American who could not speak Spanish well because well, yeah you know.
  21. Diego did a fantastic job at going from good cop to resentful, unforgiving and eventually defeated (but still cunning) drug kingpin.
Cons
A. Paints a dismal picture of Mexico. Accurate, but unfair in my opinion when it comes to the general Mexican people.
  1. I have been here living near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico since March of this year. I have been coming here since the early 2000's. I have witnessed corruption a few times. Some Mexican nationals on an ATV run from Guadalajara to PV were kidnapped (1 killed) in front of the Costco here two months ago. The New Generation Jalisco Cartel posted a few Twitter videos flexing their firepower a few months ago. A drug lord was recently arrested in Guanajuato. El Chapo's son is giving food to hospitals in Sinaloa. El Chapo is saying he is depressed in Colorado's maximum security prison due to COVID restrictions. This is still ongoing.
  2. Banorte, one of Mexico's 4 largest commercial banks by assets, was caught in a drug money laundering operation in the late 90's.
  3. Mexican politicians are corrupt as hell. Current president AMLO's brother was recently caught accepting a $1 mil USD bribe. Corruption is up in Mexico. Even the US ambassador and former US Ambassador before him warned not to invest here. Seems like nothing has changed.
  4. Displaying how easy these narcotraficantes can control THE MILITARY in the 80's may be accurate, but paints an extremely bad picture of Mexico from the eyes of an American viewer (and international audience) that has never been here.
  5. Even though the Military has been patrolling the carretera 200 in response to the Jalisco Cartel - I have no doubt these cats would murder me if I was on the wrong side of Mexican politics. I have no faith in 911 (same as the USA) if I called it down here. Private security is the way to go. Bribes are still very effective; however, I have never had to make one thankfully. I would also not like to contribute to a system of corruption.
  6. Mexican police - at least I have met some good federales, but no doubt they would do something unethical if their masters told them too. Good news is that at least a few dozens officers got fired in central Jalisco for narco connections.
  7. Narcos still control large swaths of Mexico. I just believe they are more educated and know not to shoot some mofo in the club over some petty shit. They have adapted and will continue to.
  8. Does not mention, but clearly displays the anti-intellectualism of Mexico unlike El Dragon which tries to push multiculturality and Mexican technological prowess. From either the foreign or Mexican perspective, it does not support a view that Mexicans can achieve intellectually. Diego Luna is our best bet and some example that guy is...
  9. No one cashes in their chips. Even the promising Teresa Ruiz pushes it with the Tijuanna cartel until she gets arrested in a warehouse. She came off as so powerful and sophisticated. So much for Mexican pride.
  10. If I was a tourist ignorant of Mexico, I would never want to come here after watching this show. 1986 is still pretty close especially if the narco problem is still ongoing.
  11. Shows (intentionality of the directors and editors aside) Mexicans are incapable of long term organization. They eventually break apart.
  12. Shows that even the common people are active participants or complicit with these narcotraficantes that "own" whole cities or towns because they know everyone and have guns.
  13. Does not delve into the history of why Mexico and Latin America is so corrupt.
  14. Start at the 300 year Spanish colonalization and extraction of resources.
  15. Continue to US involvement at all stages of Mexico from 1821 onward.
  16. See Mexican-American war of 1846-1848 where we took half of Mexico's terrirory by force for $15 mil at the time and forced then Mexican president Santa Anna to sign it. We provoked the war. I do not apologize for it personally. Mexican corruption and disorganization also led to us winning that war. It is just easier to blame the USA than take responsibility for what you can within your own country. And I sure as hell would not give back Texas, California, New Mexico, Arizona, etc. However, I question if Mexico would have the orgaization to develop those terriorties seeing that the power players in Mexico City do not care about the North. The North of Mexico is its own culture more aligned with the USA. Baja California is totally off the national power grid.
  17. The best way to balance understanding why all this corruption and poverty came to be would be to read Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of Pillage of a Continent by Eduardo Galeano. Although....that would make the show less sexy and appealing to the American (and even Mexican) viewer.
  18. I guess we have to settle for Walt's explanation that "everybody's gotta eat" and Guillermo González Calderoni's "This is just how it works down here - you do not understand!"
  19. Obviously and accurately showed the technological superiority of the USA. Glad it was led by Kiki who is Mexican-American leading on that, but Walt eventually took a classic American role in season 2.
  20. Kiki representing the USA in Season 1 was a great counternarrative to the "white savior complex" Hollywood is heavily criticized for (#OscarsaresoWhite).
  21. Falls into many Mexican stereotypes (Bandito lifestyle of Francisco Arellano Felix, the roughness and immaturity of the Sinaloan cowboys, drinking too much alcohol, etc.). All accurate especially for narcotraficantes.
  22. The dark Mexican/indigenous Mexican bad and lighter skin Mexican good or at least successful is imagery shown all throughout the show. Other than Azul - Season 2 Episode 10 everyone around the table is a light skinned Mexican. And yes, there is a power differential in this society. A pigmentocracy if you will. How Rafa went down was probably accurate, but sad. The dude tried to get clean, but eventually could not control himself. Also, the darker Mexicans are portrayed as the workers, being shooting at others, people getting shot, etc. Again, accurate. Especially for the 1980's. However, it is just too bad that is how things are still down here.
  23. Language thoughts -
  24. more que's than mande's than I expected - did not hear mande once.
  25. all the creative Mexican slang (surprised they did not used naco at all).
  26. The Whole Marvel Universe of Narcotraficantes feels cool, but ultimately serves to glorify these criminals.
  27. Weak on showing discrimination against Mexicans/Mexican-Americans by white Americans. Not necessary. Shown once or twice. However, the USA is still dealing with race problems and I have no doubt it was rough for a guy like Kiki in the 80's in the lowest department on the totem pole (DEA). If Trump is still using the "bad hombre" line, can you imagine what was said in the 80's in Fresno, CA? USA's moral standing needs to be taken down a notch.
  28. Did a fair job showing the nasty ways the USA meddled in Latin America. But like the Spanish ultimately won the narrative of conquistadors over the defeated indigenous of mesoamerica - I believe the USA ultimately wins the moral narrative battle over Mexico simply due to all the corruption and violence of these narcotraficantes.
  29. I do sometimes wonder if there were any good apples in the Mexican upperclass. However, I would not waste my time finding them. Sounds like they were all complicit in the game.
I like Diego Luna a lot. Would not change him for some white Argentinian guy playing a Mexican like El Dragon. He is super representative of the majority of Mexicans (and yes, they have a Vida Aspiracional problem with their media here). First saw him in Star Wars. Watched his Pan y Circo in Amazon Prime. The guy is both privileged (born into a degree of wealth), woke, and trying to get other Mexicans to be woke (lot of Mexicans still think this is not racist and part of their national culture...).
That all said I expect more from the guy in influencing this script to positively portray Mexicans. Perhaps that is boring, but my suggestions are:
  1. Have someone with the sense to walk off, turn their life around (but still be in touch with them), etc. Diego's 2nd wife is not that deep in the game and she has kids. Francisco tried, but ultimately does not want to be a snitch and gets shot by 30 people despite knowing he has a kid on the way...
  2. I would have liked to see some forgiveness from someone. But if that is not true then forget it. I prefer the truth over good PR for Mexico. It is always eye for an eye. Predictable. Diego at first had the restraint of a warrior in Season 1. That eventually wore off as he got drunk with power.
  3. Show student protests against this stuff (then you find out nasty stuff like the Tlateloco Massacre of 1968 or the 43 students that went missing in 2014 on a school trip to Mexico City).
  4. Show someone in the pueblo that refuses to be complicit in narco money. It would have been nice to have that counterbalance of an honest Mexican constantly being observed, but not bothered by these narcos. Doubt those sociopaths would care.

2020.09.06 06:27 beanieweenie123 Does it make me a hypocrite to not want to date autistic guys? Or even guys who resemble autistic traits?

I’m in college and I’ve always had a very distinct type of the perfect guy. A guy who isn’t autistic, preferably plays sports, and has a lot of friends and goes to a lot of frat parties. I feel subconsciously it’s because I feel like if a guy like that were interested in me then id look at myself as less autistic.
I’ve always been an overachiever. My family has always been ashamed of my autism and sent me to countless treatment centers to teach me how to mask. That’s why I’m so good at it. I don’t even think they cared if i was actually autistic or not as long as I could pretend not to be for long periods of time. (We’re upperclass and it comes with lots of demands and expectations-literally the worst situation for an autistic person.)
Anyways despite my conditioning, I’ve always dreamed of my future husband, even before i was diagnosed, and what id want him to be. Successful, Handsome, Likeable, Someone my family will like (im very family oriented), Popular, Normal, etc.
I know i mask perfectly and all but i keep reverting in my head back to something my old social skills teacher told me I should “settle for an autistic guy”. That it’d probably be good for me to date a guy “like me”. But it’s honestly so stupid because I don’t even get along with other autistic guys. As hard as it is for me after i get home from a long day of masking, I still CARE about social adequacy while a lot of other autistic ppl like to harp on how “social constructs are stupid ways of society” or how “its all learned behavior none of this material lifestyle matters” and if you believe that thats fine i mean everyone should live the life that best suits them, its just not for me.
I also like i said believe that if i can score the type of guy who fits my description i can please my family and live up to my expectations and also feel better about myself like damn if this guy likes me maybe im actually doing a good job masking and am less weird than I thought i was.
Disclaimer: i normally do attract that kind of guy, along with other types of guys too, but I’ve had my fair share of luck in the past, just didn’t last because the guy moved out of state.

2020.08.10 16:25 TheSithShallRule My first fluffy: Who am I?

I have decided I should shed some light on the characters of my "My first fluffy" series. Toffee has explained her past already, so that's one current protagonist, but what about Toffee's owner?
Name: Dakota Miora
Birth date: 7th January, 1955
Death date: Still Alive
PhDs: Biology, Technology, Law
Info: Dr. Miora was born into a rich, upperclass family, who ran a business selling machinery, weapons, tools and more to the government. Miora was an only child, and received only discipline from his parents. He spent his young life doing nothing but studies at the most expensive schools, only ever wanting a friend.
At the age of Seventeen, his parents passed away when a machine malfunctioned upon inspection to see for themselves how good their work was. Having no say in the matter, Dakota was given the company to run, and, using his knowledge that he had the biggest business in the world, he could do what he wanted. And what he wanted the most was a friend.
But he needed inspiration, he wasn't just making a robot to mass produce, he was making a sentient robot, one that would take the world by storm, and not to forget, kid-friendly. His research led him to a popular Television show among children, named "my little pony". He would make a fluffy, tiny pony, a pet that a child could hold in its arms, a Gou that would live it's owner more than anything else. That's right, Dakota Miora (at least in my universe) was the First ever owner if Hasbio.
He wanted to give it cute and silly, colour and life, joy and beauty. He had the best engineers and workers he owned swear an oath to serve him until he died, even when he retires. He sent these people to work, coding and creating, genetically modifying.... until that fateful day....
The animal rights corporation, PETA, had caught wind of Dr. Miora's doings, and during the testing process, raided the factories and released the prototypes into the wild, quite foolishly. They spread like a plague, and yet no one blamed PETA. After releasing several generations of these sentient lovable, yet stressball-like toys now called fluffies, Dr. Miora met his Wife in an attempt to bring a rival company into his grasp.
Quite unfortunately, after he and his wife had one son named Lucas and one daughter named Mia, the wife was diagnosed with a terminal illness. She passed away 2 months after her her son turned three, leaving Miora and his children alone. They settled down in a town in England, though they lived separate from each other thanks to studies. With Lucas at several schools and Mia learning politics, Miora was once again, alone. He lived like this for many years, taking calls and watching his failed creations cause trouble for the world. He later retired, a year before adopting Toffee.
End of Info
Miora did live a sad life until he met Toffee, but I'll tell you something about next time: With the help of his oath-sworn workers, he plans to make a friend for Toffee, a fluffy unlike any ever made, one he won't mass produce. He will look to the stars for inspiration when it dawns on him: He will make a star pattern fluffy, and His name will be Cosmos.
Bye for now!

2020.08.05 17:23 veetaul Does anyone else see this as full of holes that people are going to circumvent as much as possible?

Dear Undergraduate, Graduate and Professional School Students:
I'm writing today – on the heels of my message to you on COVID-19 testing earlier this week and President Ryan's message yesterday on modifications to fall opening – to provide you with important updates on choices you may make about the coming fall semester, including actions for you to take consistent with those choices. I recognize it's a lengthy message, but I ask that you take a moment to carefully review what is set forth below.
The COVID-19 pandemic has taken much from you. I know it can feel like so much of life is suddenly outside of your control. However, there are important choices about your UVA experience that are yours to make. They are described below. Please also know that if you elect to be in Charlottesville this fall, we will do all we can to create safe but meaningful opportunities for you to be together as a student community. I don't want you to feel your life has been put on pause. There remains much that awaits you.
Decisions about the fall. In the coming days, all students will need to make some important decisions about the fall semester. By its very nature, the COVID-19 pandemic means your individual actions can affect others. Likewise, the actions of others will have an impact on you. For these reasons, you should keep community at the forefront of your actions and carefully weigh your options for the fall.
The University has intentionally built flexibility into the available options:
Recognize the risks. It is critically important that you and your family discuss the risks imposed by the pandemic. If you are not comfortable with the guidelines established by the University, including living in a residence hall with others, it's okay to consider whether you'd prefer to take courses online and remain in your home community for the fall. If you feel you cannot adhere to the public health requirements the University, Commonwealth, and local authorities are imposing to slow the spread of COVID-19, you should reconsider whether returning to Grounds this fall makes sense for you. The University must enforce these mandates, including consequences for failure to comply. We fervently want this to be a safe, productive semester for everyone, but this semester will be very different from what you may have experienced here previously. That's something to keep in mind as you make your decision.
Determine the choice that is best for you. I recognize how difficult these decisions are for each of you. You have been dealt a challenging set of circumstances, and what you expected your undergraduate, graduate, and/or professional school experience to be has been severely upended in many ways. Whether you are a fourth-year who had been looking forward to your final two semesters, a first-year who has already experienced several disappointments since March, or a student embarking on a new journey for graduate study, the answers are not easy. They are yours to determine, however, in light of what is best for you, your health, and your future.
UVA will be here for you. We are here to support you in whatever you decide. Through virtual classes and outreach, supplemented by as many instances of in-person teaching and services as possible, we want you to have a meaningful college experience inside and outside the classroom. The pandemic is a real threat we cannot control. We can, however, control our response to it, both individually and as a University.
If you have questions about the fall or the below requirements, please refer to the Student Return to Grounds website. You may also write [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]).
Let's move forward together.
Sincerely,
Allen W. Groves University Dean of Students
Summary: Student Requirements for Fall 2020
1. On-Grounds Housing Contract: August 24 (Revised) Deadline to Cancel
If you signed a housing contract to live on Grounds, but now wish to cancel your contract, you may do so with no penalty by writing [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) by August 24. We have extended this from the original August 5 deadline, but please do not fail to communicate your decision by this new date.
2. SIS To-Do List
Beginning today, August 5, you should have seen a To-Do added in SIS:
COVID-19 Risk Mitigation Requirements
You must complete this action by August 25.
3. Initial Question in SIS
This question will determine if you need to complete all the requirements. It reads:
Will you be living or learning on Grounds or in the local community of Charlottesville and Albemarle County during the fall 2020 semester?
Note: "Learning" refers to any in-person activity, such as attending class in person, going to office hours, meeting as part of a student study group, or visiting the library or gym.
If your answer is NO, you do not need to do anything further. If your answer is YES, you will need to complete these three requirements:
3a. Testing. Obtain a negative test result via a COVID-19 self-administered test. On Monday, August 3, you received a message from me about ordering a mail-in self-test kit from the University's vendor, Let's Get Checked. You are urged to order the test by the end of today, August 5, so you receive it promptly. Please wait to take the test according to the schedule outlined in my August 3 email. Note: Some students will need to follow special instructions for completing the test. 3b. Video. View a video on new Rules and Norms. A group of your fellow students has created a video that summarizes ways in which new rules and norms will be a vital part of keeping the UVA and larger Charlottesville community safe in light of COVID-19. 3c. Agreement. Sign an agreement committing to follow those Rules and Norms. It is the shared responsibility of our community to maintain a healthy and safe environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. You must commit to this shared responsibility by signing and agreeing to the terms of the Agreement to Acknowledge Compliance with Public Health Measures. In brief, students must commit to: Wear a mask at all times indoors, except when alone (or with roommates) and in private spaces (e.g., dorm rooms or apartments). Wear a mask outside when a physical distance of at least 6-feet cannot be maintained. Maintain 6-feet or more from others when outside your home. Gather socially in groups of 15 or fewer or not at all. In addition, visitors to students in Charlottesville and on Grounds will be limited, and extracurricular activities will be modified in ways that comport with the health and safety protocols.Self-Quarantine. In addition to these requirements, you are strongly encouraged to self-quarantine for 14 days prior to your return to Charlottesville or the start of classes. This means you should stay home, separate from others outside the home, monitor your health, and follow directions from your state or local health department. This is a protective measure that limits exposure to individuals who may be infected with COVID-19 and thus can transmit the virus. The University recognizes this may pose challenges, but it is a highly effective measure to limit the spread of virus to Grounds once school resumes. If you are unable to self-quarantine, it is essential that you minimize contact with others during this 14-day period. Specifically, you should not attend any large social events or interact with more than a few people (3-5) at a time. You should be vigilant in physical distancing (maintaining at least a 6-foot distance between yourself and others), using a face covering, washing hands frequently, and refraining from touching your face (especially eyes) without washing hands first. If you have been living abroad, regardless of your nationality, you are required to self-quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in the U.S. While waiting for the test result and even upon receiving a negative test result and subsequently traveling to Charlottesville, students should continue to take special care to avoid crowds as much possible, physically distance, and wear a face covering. More details are spelled out on page 2 of the University's COVID-19 Prevention, Detection, and Response Plan. Hoos Health Check: All students, faculty, and staff planning to be on Grounds will complete a daily check on symptoms related to COVID-19 through the HOOS Health Check app or by email. The HOOS Health Check app is designed to make individuals aware of their symptoms, to encourage personal responsibility, and, if the individual exhibits symptoms, to provide resources and next steps for testing. Instructions for downloading HOOS Health Check will be provided in mid-August.
4. For more information. If you have questions about any of the above, see the Student Return to Grounds website. You may also write [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]).

2020.06.18 20:01 aquilabyrd Summary of today's Town Hall (long post)

Notes from the town hall, forgive any typos or if I missed anything. The recording of the town hall should be available here soon.
Operating Procedures:
Student health and wellness services should be in person, some offices will continue to operate remotely.
Convocation, the tipping point, hall meetings, and other required events for first year students will be held virtually.
Research labs are already in the process of reopening, but keep in mind that research with in-person participants will likely be on a delayed reopening schedule.
International students should pay close attention to the US embassy in their countries to see if Visa appointments open up, but to keep in mind that there are travel bans in some countries currently that may prevent re-entering in the fall. If you are going to have issues returning in the fall, please work with your OIS advisospecialist to make sure you can maintain your student status.
Students are not required to come back to campus if they do not feel safe doing so or are prevented from doing so. All classes will be able to be participated in remotely.
Masks/PPE - masks will be required in classes, most likely, but those rules have not yet been finalized by the health working group. Masks are currently required in all re-opened research labs. The university is planning on providing masks - more than one mask per student upon arrival to campus. Students will be allowed to use their own face coverings. Within residence halls, students will be required to wear masks and social distance, at least as far as rules are currently.
Social distancing - there will be a Pitt Community Compact that outlines the guidelines students will need to agree to follow to protect students. There’s a shared responsibility to protect people - remember, wearing a mask doesn’t necessarily protect yourself, it protects others.
Clubs/sports - Intent is to have a dynamic experience where student organizations will be allowed to operate within guidelines, will probably look very different. Social distancing, smaller participation in some venues, masks, etc. Further details are waiting on the health working group to come up with the rules.
Activities fair, as well as some other welcome week events, will be online.
Testing - no concrete plans for testing yet. Health working group is, well, working on that.
Grad students should communicate with their departments in terms of figuring out whether recitations/other duties will be virtual or in person. Students will be accommodated if they cannot participate in-person.
Graduate student orientation will be virtual and will include international graduate student orientation.
A lot of student events will, most likely, be online, and organizations should try to be accessible to students participating virtually.
The spring semester is still largely up in the air. They can’t make plans this early in advance in terms of how the pandemic will continue. If things remain how they are now - neither worse nor better - expect spring break to be canceled, but if this happens the spring semester will start later.
Some practical classes may require students to be in person, and students who can’t attend in person will need to be worked with on an individual basis.
The first three days of classes will be remote, to accommodate students returning to campus who might not be there in time (especially considering leases starting at the original start date of the semester).
Finals will be conducted in person the monday and tuesday of thanksgiving week, and the remainder will be remotely monday through thursday after thanksgiving. The semester is not shortened, merely shifted.

Classes:
[email protected] - in person experience/live experience for all students within classes at least once per week. Probably a live streamed class with in person components, while maintaining social distancing. These classes will then be recorded, and will be uploaded to be watched by students unable to participate in synchronous activity. Larger classes will be split into separate groups for in person activities, as the whole class cannot fit in the classroom at all times.
Class times - time in between classes has been extended, and class rooms are being reassigned, including some classes in nontraditional classroom spaces, class times will shift as well, but shouldn’t conflict in terms of classes - it will be a universal expansion.
Classroom environments will look quite different - it’s been touched on before, but students will be required to socially distance in classrooms. Classroom capacities will be reduced by around 50%.

Housing:
Housing - arrival will be august 13th to 16th. All students with guaranteed housing will be accommodated. Assignments will go out around the second week of july.
Dining halls - social distancing in dining halls, seating will be different, utensils different. Plans don’t seem to really be worked out yet, lots of talk about to-go food and more information should come out in mid-july.
First year housing assignments will come out mid-july.
Apartment style and upperclass housing should not expect any changes to housing or roommates, due to more private spaces and semi-private bathrooms.
If students become sick and test positive, students will be isolated in a quarantine facility on campus, with multiple check-ins with university health officials and a care team. Students will maintain going to classes online.
Housing and roommates - requested roommates will be assigned as normal, with the incorporation of living/learning communities. No rules have been solidified yet in terms of allowing visitors into the student residence halls. FAQ for housing on panther central for housing should go up around the same time as first-year housing assignments.
Apartment style/suite style housing will not change, but if a student tests positive for COVID19 the student will be isolated in another location, and students who were in contact with that student might also be quarantined.
Quarantine/Isolation - they seem… reluctant to clarify what this means. Probably still being worked on by the working group.
Move-in: they are working on trying to have a shipping service so that items will be waiting in a students room when they arrive. Students should consider bringing fewer things to facilitate a faster move-in.
Freshman specific:
Freshman students should submit their photo for their student id through panther central - check your orientation course - and you will be mailed your id prior to arriving on campus
First year students will be allowed to enroll soon, but they should keep in touch with their academic advisers for exact details.
Housing assignments will come out mid-july. Stay strong, panthers.

2019.11.05 20:36 ygnim Birthday gifts/experience for an intellectual gay male SO (24M)?

Hi, I (22M) am currently in my last year at Stanford, and I am seeing this guy (24M) who is in his second-year of a PhD program in Comparative Literature.
Long story short: we connected over having similar interests, if not deep investment, in the Humanities. We both study literature (I do this more) and theory (he does that more) so our conversation usually revolves around analyzing and theorizing social issues. I have to admit that we are both snobs in that sense and in the our personal lives too because our most meaningful interactions happen over going to the opera, lending each other books, sharing insightful articles, reading each other poetry, watching an arthouse movie, etc.
I recently asked him to be my boyfriend, but he refused out of a feeling of unpreparedness. I was heartbroken for a while and even harbored resentment towards him but we managed to sort it all out. We still see each other in classes, hung out, and do meaningful (almost couple-like) things together like going to the farmers’ market on a Sunday. Now I just feel like I love him unconditionally, and I derive so much joy seeing his growth. We do have a few dates set in the future and even plan to take some more classes together as well.
Now to the problem: His birthday is approaching this January 29th, 2020 (he is an Aquarius if anyone wishes to go there) and, being the type of person who always like to plan 3 months ahead that I am, I want to find something special and meaningful for him that he will be at least wow’ed by it. I really need your suggestions because the cool and intellectual ideas I have have already been done.
Just to list a few things I have done for him already: bought tickets to the San Francisco Opera, gave him a book of the greatest Vietnamese (my culture) masterpiece in translation, cooked a fancy dish, serenaded him with a sonnet, bought him a notebook (since he likes to keep journals) and an exfoliator (since I love to take care of my skin and he should too). In the next few weeks, he is taking me to go see Parasite (a Korean movie) in theater (because I have not watched it), and I am buying Cirque du Soleil tickets for us.
I know all of the above sound so elitist and expensive, but I really do not mind if I am recommended something that is fun, cheap, and accessible. I really do love this person so as long as the gift/experience makes them remember for years to come, I am down to commit to it.
More on his background: he is Danish; studied and lived abroad in many different countries; has three siblings; gay and out to his family; is slightly out of tune with pop culture; likes Tash Sultana (he went to their concert lately) and Bob Dylan (he took me to a Dylan concert actually); from an upperclass family; recently regressed to eating meat after being vegetarian for a while; uses his phone for only 50 minutes a day; and loves female football.
TLDR: birthday suggestions for a snobbish MF that I love so much

2019.11.05 00:20 ChemicalSand French Cinema these days: Sauvage; Doubles Vies (Non-Fiction); Plaire, Aimer, et Courir Vite (Sorry Angel) and more...

I was inspired, after watching these three French movies with a 2019 US release date, and after digging around for other titles available in the U.S., to write some short reviews and try to put together a little survey of current French movies. Please, if you are French or living in France, give your own impressions of the current scene, as you will know much more than I do.
My general thinking is that the French are doing cinematic realism like no one else. Many of the small, slice of life movies will never find their way out of the country, and the ones that do may not always be flat-out masterpieces, but they point to a country that is refining and mastering its craft in a very different way than Hollywood or even the American indie world.
Of course, then you have directors like Leos Carax, Gaspard Noe, Bruno Dumont, Quentin Dupieux, Hadžihalilović who are very far from straight "realism."But you could still maybe argue that the "real" inflects their movies in very interesting ways; one of my favorite scenes in Holy Motors is a dad driving his daughter home from a party... it's like something straight out of a French drama, if it was filmed in another dimension. Anyways:
Sauvage
Truly intense movie about a young gay prostitute selling himself in Paris's Bois de Boulogne, the infamous park where hookers line the road sides at night. Gaspard Noé-esque intensity, albeit less stylized, more "realism." A feel-bad movie for sure, but gripping nonetheless, and one of the ones that reminds you just how different other peoples worlds and realities can be than your own. It's a feeling I've had in real life, with people who live much more interesting and exciting (or bleak) lives than mine. It's a movie that's best when you put your own morality aside (hard as it is to do), and embrace the animalistic and sensual. 9/10
Doubles Vies (Non-Fiction) (On Hulu)
I probably would not have liked this movie had I watched it when I was living in France at 17. There's an endless stream of French movies about upperclass Parisians, their marriages, their affairs, their kids, their dinner table discussions, and these movies all engage in a general filmic interrogation of joie de vivre, happiness, and what it means to live. A kind of contented, easy going pretentiousness... in America there is a sense of shame surrounding intellectual discussion that doesn't exist in France. These movies often capture the mannerisms and tones of French conversation very well, but they always annoyed me a little.
This movie emphasizes all of that to an almost parodic degree... extremely long conversations about the state of media and publishing today, affairs, arguments. But I forgive it for its excess, because I found it charming and extremely funny in some scenes (look out for their discussion of the White Ribbon), and because I've mellowed in my tastes. Still, I feel like some aspects may be lost in translation for U.S audiences, even though this was, ironically, one of the movies that got a slightly wider U.S. release—undoubtedly due to Olivier Assayas' name recognition. 8/10
Plaire, Aimer, et Courir Vite (Sorry Angel) (on Netflix)
Another realistic gay-themed movie, more similar to Call Me By Your Name than Sauvage, in that it's also based around age difference. It has much more pathos than sauvage, much more relatable, and a pretty light, funny tone, especially considering that it deals with AIDs during the 90s. Has some great scenes, very talented direction. 7.5/10
And these are my favorite French movies that had a 2018 US release date:
Jeune Femme (Montparnasse Bienvenue)
I don't know why, I just loved it. A young woman making her life in the city, on her own after a breakup. Felt it was charming, unpretentious, and refreshing. 9/10
Jusqu'a la Garde (Custody)
Stylistically, this has that same realism I was talking about, but it felt much more like a Hollywood movie in its overall construction: tight, controlled, and intense. Reminds me of a Denis Villeneuve movie maybe. I won't say too much, but I really urge people to see this, it definitely won't get "lost in translation" like some of these other ones might. Maybe didn't touch me as personally as some others, but very impressive. 8.5/10
Félicité
Amazing movie about a mother and professional singer wandering all around Kinshasha, trying to get healthcare for her injured son. Rich sense of place, of sounds and color, of movement through the city, and a loose feel, with some dreamlike sequences slipping in. Kaleidoscopic and moving. 9.5/10
I have a whole list of movies that I'm planning to see, that I want to see that aren't available, or that will be released soon.
-Portrait of A Lady On Fire is getting major buzz
-Gaspard Noé's Climax, of course.
-Romain Gavras' Le Monde est A Toi is on Netflix.
-Knife + Heart is available for purchase online
And here's a whole bunch of movies from 2018 alone (French release) that struck me as interesting, although many are completely unavailable:
Au Poste, Pupille, Shéhérazade, Le Grand Bain, c’est ca l’amour, Nos batailles, Amanda, L'Amour Flou, En Guerre, Mademoiselle de Joncquières, les chatouilles, Sofia, Monsieur, l’heure de la sortie, Inséparables, Rebelles...
Let me know if you've seen any of these! Or feel free to talk about French film in the 21st century more broadly...

2019.10.21 18:10 quixoticlxrd Just wanted to get it off my chest

Sorry if my english is bad. Ok so you may feel cringy or whatever but please just take your time and hear me out . This is a depressing story of how i went thru broken trust and broken heart l. So last year when school started and few months later there was this popular transfered girl in my underclass i kept bumping into her in school hallways. 1st i didnt rlly paid any attention to her. And few weeks goes by and my friends (female) from upperclass said to me tht some popular girl is took interest in me i was very surprised and shocked cuz im like a ghost in my school. I got rlly happy and excited. So i asked them whats her @ and after i got her ID i slid into her Dm. No doubt she was very popular but she was popular in diffrent city so i didnt rlly knew her. We chatted and talked all day for about a week and i learned that she was a bad chick like a rlly bad one she smokes and drinks and wears rlly short skirts. And also she had like 15 exes. I didnt rlly cared about if she bad or not cuz i just wanted to move on from my prev relationship and i guess she wanted that too. We talked and got close and then few weeks later i decided to ask her out. I asked her out and she accepted my feelings. And thts how we started dating 1st week was ok but from the 2nd week there was few misunderstandings but i didnt rlly cared. But she was a very sensitive girl she got angry at the tiniest things. Thats when i knew its not gonna last long at least i thought. As i was dating her things were getting hard whenever i sneak a peek her dms its always some dudes hitting her up. She likes seing me jealous so she doesnt stop. Few months pass by and march comes. Her bestie dating someone too lets call them Chloe and Alex. After hearing tht she wanted to go on a double date i wasnt a fan of it but i couldnt help it. So the day comes and we went on the double date. Alex was a playboy he was tall stylish skinny and kind of a model. The double date was rlly fun "was". Since then we started to hang out more Alex had so much common with my gf at the time. The more we hung out the more i felt...weird like i felt rlly weird. One day i caught alex asking for her phone number i asked her what did they talked about she said "he was asking how to surprise chloe" and i thought but why talk in private? Few days later we decided to hung out in a cafe but she and Alex left leaving just me n chloe they were taking so long but i thought they were just talking about the surprise. And then my phone rang. My classmate called me n said: "bro your girl is holding hands with another boy here" i asked the location and ran fast as i could. And i after i got there i looked at them in distance but i couldnt hear what they were talking about i headed back and few min later they both came at the same time laughing. And in the cafe she kept looking at Alex i joked about she staring at her and she got so nervous. After chloe and alex left i asked her what they talked about she couldnt tell me so i got angry and not talked with her for 30 min she finally told me what was happening alex was hitting her up i got so angry and we talked about it and got through it together but...few days later my grandma passed away and she was talking to me so diffrently like i she wasnt intrested in me i decided to check her dm they were 3 dudes 2 ex and 1 new guy i got tired and broke. I was so stressed bcuz of my grandma s passing and then her. I broke up with her and 3 days later she starts calling and texting me about how she misses me. She apologized and we got back fast forward to may i kind of got tired of the relationship so i made an excuse and decided to break up i told my bois the excuse. And after i broke up i started talking to this girl lets call her Billie. Billie and i had similar intrests. The girl started to hang with one of my bois cuz they live together. And then they got much close like closer than me. My friend had told her all of my excuse. She got mad and then got jealous of Billie. Billie and her started hating each other and the school found out tht she smokes and drinks and starts calling her Hoe and her name was rlly getting worse and worse i couldnt just look and do nothing so i thought if i get back all this will stop and it did but there was smth going. Like she and her friends was keeping a secret and i felt tht. And i was figuring things out. My friend had feelings towards Her. Few days later she got drunk and suddenly starts shouting at me saying "Leave me! I am a hoe" her friends were trying to shut her up but she said to them to tell me. What happened was My friend and she had slept behind my back or cheated on me with my best friend. I told them "i knew" and dropped her off and went home when i got home i was home alone and my parents called and said i will be alone for the night as soon as i finished talking i screamed and threw my phone to wall and started to punch walls and cry and scream. After 30 mins of tht i felt empty and numb all i could think was what did i do to deserve this. And after tht i felt i had no feelings towards her i faked being in love with her for 2 months i decided to break up. And then she started a rumour about " i started a fake rumour about her cheating on me with my best friend " since she s popular and has many friends and big brothers they all started to hate me and says stuff like they will kill me. Even when i tell them i didnt started any rumour and she cheating on is true no one would believe me. Cuz im nobody in my school. I just dont get her like her friends keep telling me she loves you and cant forget me. I forgave my best friend cuz he was drunk and cornered he rlly felt bad and apologized to me and i didnt wanted to lose my friend over some girl.

2019.09.15 19:23 49Lion My fiancé is keeping in touch with her Ex’s family

Alright my friends, here’s the lowdown, so my fiancé (female) visited the grandparents of her cheating ex the week of Christmas last year. They live an hour away from our house. She gave them gifts and they chewed the fat. I expressed some concerns with her but she said I was just being insecure. I thought maybe she was right. Well, she’s planning on doing that again this year for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and she’s already purchased them and their daughter (her ex’s mother) some expensive gifts.
My problems are the following: 1.) Her Ex (she dated this dude four years) has called her and said he still loves her and wants to get back together after 20 months of being done
2.) She gets all dressed up to see his family and does her hair. She’s not one of those chicks who loves “dressing up.”
3.) I saw on her FB that she flagrantly exaggerated my job title to them.
4.) And lastly, she doesn’t like my own family that much! (But neither do I, f**k it, I’ll be honest). I just mention that because her ex’s family is financially in the upperclass and mine are honest, blue collar workers.
My fiancé doesn’t have much family of her own, so in a way I get it, but her and the ex use to get it on in the very living room of the grandparents home. The same living room she’ll visit in a couple months. I rarely feel vulnerable but I do now. Please advise.

2019.08.12 02:13 OpeningPeace My fuck-up of an older sister got 25k from my grandparents. I work hard, and got nothing.

My older sister (25F) and I (19F) are both victims of a horrible childhood from an abusive alcoholic mother. My sister chose to suppress her trauma, REFUSE therapy that was offered to her, and has consistently been dating abuser after abuser and signing up for credit card after credit card, racking up thousands in debt. She is the victim always, claims to have random illnesses that prevent her from getting a job. She has LIED to my grandparents (rich bags of money) saying she's gotten her degree, even though she dropped out years ago.
I have held a steady part time job since I was 17, working thirty hours a week while getting my education. I've made Dean's list every semester. I could have gone to high-end private colleges with my grades, but I couldn't afford it and had to settle for transferring to a university after 2 years at community college. I moved out at 18, and pay my own rent, car and car insurance, groceries, education fees, etc. I'm the only grandchild who even BOTHERS to visit my grandparents in their retirement home, and I'm the only one out of my sister and I to actually make amends and try and correct the damage that our mother has done to this family.
This morning I get a text from my sister, saying "I was at the dentists' today when I got a notification, Nana and Papa just paid off my entire debt! 25 thousand dollars!" She then proceeded to make a joke about how she's going to open up SO MANY MORE credit cards now, and maybe then she won't be homeless! I felt sick when I told her I was happy for her.
My grandparents did the same thing with my mother. Threw money at her, hoping she'd pull her head out of her ass and fix her life, but it did jack shit. It enabled bad behavior, and neither my sister nor my mother are any better for it. I don't fucking get why these idiots get to reap rewards from their shitty habits and awful life choices.
"But come on, your older sister endured a bad childhood!" SO DID I. IN FACT, I ENDURED MORE. When my mom's addiction got worse, where did my sister go? She got to go live with her dad in cushy, suburbic upperclass Northern California, and where did I go? Nowhere. I was the one who had to explain to the police that my mom decided to get shitfaced and go driving, and hasn't been home in 2 days. I was the one who battled eating disorders and suicidal tendencies in middle school, because I was alone in my mother's abuse while my sister lived it up in the suburbs.
I have done everything that was asked of me, and I did it with a smile on my face even though I feel like fucking dying. I have held this goddamn family together since I was in my early teens, and I am fucking tired of not getting a BIT of recognition. Maybe it's selfish, I don't give a fuck anymore. I wanted that money, and I know I deserve it far more than she does. I am sick, I am heartbroken, and I am betrayed.

2019.07.30 21:24 SymbIot3k Personal effects of long time bullying (Long read) pt 1.

Last few months my antisocial behavior and anxiety have been getting pretty bad. I started to reflect on the causes of my problems and alot of them are rooted back to long term bullying, which started at a very young age and spanned across different schools. Ill break this small story into 2 parts since i don't have much time to type. If people enjoy this small ready ill end up posting part 2 which covers my senior year into my adult hood.
The moral of the story will be concluded in part 2....
CAUTION: BAD GRAMMAR
EDIT: This covers my early years of school to 11th grade and im only highlighting the parts i remember. I was bullied alot but these r the points that stand out most. I will try to keep this as short as possible without going into too much details.
*this will NOT contain names of people or places to help keep things safe
I grew up really poor since my parents were young so we were always bouncing around like gypsies. The first school i attended was a very preppy sports oriented school, which i was involved with. Of course, i wasn't like the other kids. Instead of foaming at the mouth about the Emmet Smith and the Dallas Cowboys, or being jittery about how the Chicago Bulls will be dominant in the NBA. I was more into nerd things like Star Wars, Warhammer, MTG etc etc. BUT! I was a really big hockey fan in which no one in school knew anything about for some reason */shrug
The bullying started around 4th grade where the kids would mess with my lunch pouring milk on my food, or begin targeting me at the play ground during recess . Around that time i had no friends and i was very shy kid, so i was an easy target. Fast forward to 6th grade was when it got really bad. Kids were actually starting to fight me, slap books out of my hands, or tackle me into lockers. I even had an incident where kids would bring in grill starters and purposely shock me during class, sometimes there was this student in my history class who would turn to his side and donkey kid me right out of my seat causing my to fly out of it.
With all this going on, i did open up to teachers and tell them what was happening. 95% of the time i was ignored. Sometimes i would even get snarky comments from teachers like " Well maybe you deserved it? " or the holy grail of adult logic " its just a phase, they will grow out of it."My parents would constantly be in contact with the school and the bullying would only get worst. It got to the point where my parents were so fed up we ended up moving to another school district around my 6th grade year. By that time, I still had no friends, wouldn't talk to anyone, but... i still competed in sports such as football since to me it was a good way to let out some aggression.
6th grade was the year that i ended up failing. I remember specifically one of my 6th grade teachers asking me if i was "autistic." That school year i had no motivation to do school work, go to school, or even try. I was at a really low moral point that i just didn't care anymore since my day schedule consisted me of being belittled.
The problem with that year, was that even my little brother had the same bullying issues and we both ended up failing the same year. My parents had enough of it and after countless meetings, changes, nothing the school did really worked nor (from my point) did it seem they cared, since the police were never involved in the bullying. With that said my parents ended picking up house and moving to a new area.
These were the years when i started to notice about my emotional state and how things got worst. My first day of school was really awkward for me. Alot of the kid approached me, being curious and wanting to talk. Even the teachers were pretty nice compared to the ones i was use too. Repeating 6th grade again didn't seem all that bad there. I started making some new friends that also had same interest in nerd stuff especially anime, like the regular stuff on toonami on cartoon network. I was invited to alot of my new friends houses where we would sit around and play video games all the time. I couldn't believe the difference between the two school communities There was even a 7th grade girl who was interested in me, who was a field hockey player, it was really taboo for a sporty chick to be into a nerd around those times. She would sneak in those typical cute notes that were so popular to me when she passed me in hallway or at lunch.
We eventually started to hang out and i ended up visiting her place, her parents were super nice farmer type people. Her parents allowed us to hang out in her room if the door was open, long an behold she was a nerd as well. I remember seeing sailor moon posters on her wall mixed in with field hockey stuff and school merch. Come to find out she was really into the same stuff i was, and her older brother was a senior i believe and was going to college, who also was into anime and gaming as well. I was honestly so happy i could die.
A few months in the relationship with me an the girl got pretty serious as we started attending school dances, we went to each others sporting events, yes i was still playing football at this time. Some of the popular kids didnt like the idea of us hanging out so it caused some problems but i tried to ignore it. This all came to the end in early-mid-spring where she had the bright idea of going into the closet with me, and you could imagine things got spicy. Her mom eventually caught us with both our shirts off kissing in the closet and oh boy i didnt hear that last of that, while her mom was on the phone with my parents she was crying on the couch and i was just sitting there confused. Her older brother walked down because he herd the commotion. The mother didn't want us seeing each other again, so before my parents came to get me her older brother came down with a VHS set. He said he should give them to me but since he was leaving he wanted me to have his prized possession. After i went home i tried to call the girl which the phone would get picked up and hung up right away. This event pretty much threw me into a new depression. I looked into the box of her brother gave me and i notice the VHS were labeled in order 1-26 of an anime called Neon Genesis Evangelion, with an extra tape labeled End of Evangelion with a sticky note that said, watch last.
Returning back to shcool was a nightmare. I started to get snarky remarks from students calling me a pervert. Apparently the mom had such a meltdown she started gossiping to other kids moms about it. The girl i use to hang out with looked really upset but every time i approached her friends would screech insanity at me, i was even screamed at being called a "panty-snatcher" like really? Alot of the kids starting picking up on the situation and all the rude comments started to get worst. I started to fall down into a downward spiral after this. Few weeks later a few kids even started shoving me like back in the old school and i tried to ignore it but that only made it worst. I started to fight back and of course, i was the one getting in trouble. I started to settle with that this was destined to happen so it continued during the school year. I eventually stopped hanging out with friends since i started to fight with them as well.
At this point i was ready to give up. During this time around my birthday, i stayed home from school for a week without my parents knowing since they worked early. I popped in the VHS tapes of Evangelion i was given. This anime literally through me into a deeper mind of depression i could ever imagine, and the movie to end it really opend my mind. My first year at the new school started so good, but everything started tumbling down near the end. By the time summer came around i tried to keep up with old friends, who were starting to get into drugs. Marijuana started to become a really bad problem. My so called friends i were making tried to get me to try but when i refused they actually respected my decision and never really pressured me into it. Mind you these people were pretty much older than i was an were also considered the social outcasts. During my 7th grade year i was mostly ignored by classmates, i even had someone come to me an say "We wanted you to join our group of friends, but we ended up staying away recourse you became friends with those people."
During my 7th grade i literally had enough of peoples shit and turned into a delinquent. When ever someone would try to bully me i would literally fight them with how fed up i was. The school did try to help me which i appreciated but i was so filled with anger i didnt know what to do with myself and football wasnt working. The bullying got worst since the kids knew they could get a reaction out of me since i was so bottled with rage. It got to the point where i couldn't container myself from kids messing with me during science due to them hitting me with the paper hornets with thumb tacks i dismissed myself into the hallway, and literally destroyed a water fountain. A kid in the hallway saw this and made a shitty comment to me and i saw red and beat the kid up where it took 2 teachers to get me off him. My parents were on me from there constantly, and the school was offering to give me a week of out of school, a week in school, and i would talk to the counselor consistently until the end of the school year. My last year of middle school continued with alot of fights due to kids provoking me and my parents literally giving up on me and it felt i had no one at that point. My so called friends were to busy doing drugs and all i had was football and anime to try an cope with my sanity.
When Highschool started, i had already built up a pretty bad reputation. I was placed in an emotional support classroom with 6 others and wasn't allowed to leave unless it was for lunch, gym, and specials. Other students were gossiping and called it the "retard room." I was really embarrassed to be in there and hated hearing it. Lunch time was pretty bad, alot of the upper class kids would mess with me constantly to try an fire me up, but we had staff inside the lunch rooms and it was pretty quick to be handled, but it was always relayed back to my teacher and she would always talk to me about it. She had a goal set up to where if i was a good boi she would allow me to start going to main course classes during the next marking period. So i basically sucked it up and agreed. The bullying actually started to get worst since the upperclass found out i had a thing back in the day with one of the popular girls. She would try to defend me but that only made things worst. Got to the point where they would throw food at me at lunch so i started to take lunch in my class room. Specials and gym class were not an issue my freshman year since it was mainly with my classmates an alot of them were pretty timid of me by this time since i fought back at their bullying.
During the summer for football camp we did 2-days. Meaning we practiced in the morning and evening. The bullying got pretty bad since i was always targeted out. Some of them use to grab 2 helmets and slam them as hard as they could on my helmet making me dazed and confused. This only fueled my fire more, since i ended up taking one of the spots as a defensive end, and upper clansman didn't like that at all. Some of the bullying got so bad, when i would come in the next day for camp people would sometimes fuck with my football gear, like throw a snake on me they brought in, or actually tackle me into my locker while getting dress. I had one incident where actually tried to dump chew spit on me and ended up missing and getting it all over my gear. There was always this one guy who would bring in boxing gloves, who was training to be a boxer in the capital... and try to box me and have other people try an box me. Of course, i would be forced at times but hey, cant win them all right?
My 10th grade year were such a rollar coaster ride for me. With majority of the football team always down my throat, some of the student body also started jumping on the band wagon. My teacher of the emotional support class room, by coincidence was the head coach for the field hockey players. So of course they would come in once in awhile and chat with her. The girl i dated back in middle school would eventually start coming in as a "tutor" and come in and talk to me once in awhile and would apologize to me alot for being ignorant. We eventually tried to work things out but once some of her friends and other jocks found out shit got worst for me. I was going back to lunch during this time and her friends and ex-bf would always mess with me. It got to the point where i eventually blew up. Her ex came over and spit in my milk and laughed, at this point i had enough. I took my milk carton and smashed it into his face breaking his nose and giving him an orbital sky fracture. His friends tried to jump me but teachers were all over it with the lunch room going nuts about it. I was eventually kicked off the football team and given 2 weeks suspension. My parents were furious.
Cops were involved but since they had camera footage and saw it was provoked they dropped the charges but the school tried to press but the police said that i was basically defending myself. The kids friends would then start taunting me out of school by egging my house or throwing chocolate syrup on my windows at night. One of the kids even came to my house to fight me. I was just sitting on my porch playing pokemon gold minding my own business when he rolled up in his car with his friends. I walked up to his window to just tell him to leave. Of course, typical teenager he started calling me names and bragging about taking my mom on a date, which didn't phase me because at this point i just didnt care anymore. I started walking away when he siad "Cant wait to see you back in your retard room"... this is what made me snapped. I went back to his window and asked what he said and he repeated himself, this is where shit got messy. I told him to get out of his car and say it to my face and he siad something along that made me snap. I literally ripped him out of his driver car seat since he wasn't wearing a seat belt and started beating him down, he couldn't even stand how senseless is was beating him, his friends got us separated and they peeled off into the distance. The cops later came by and i had to go down to the station to be questioned with the kid i just beat up.
The kids father was there an he was pretty mad, he asked me how old i was and i said 16, the father started laughing and he straight up smacked his son up side the head as the cop watched the father explained his son is 19. So of course, cop didn't issue charges since they said he would have to live with the thought of getting beat up by a kid for rest of his life.
to be continued.....

So for some backstory: I'm usually very depressed and have hard time plenty of days. I'm super awkward the first times I meet people doesn't matter who it is. So this upperclass girl sees me going home alone from school and asks if I want to take a coffee with her (I get supernervous but agrees bc why not) When we started talking after buying our coffee we talked for 3hrs nonstop which has never happened to me. 1 week after I invite her for a coffee which she agrees on, same thing 3hrs of nonstop convo.
Now next week on Friday I was going to ask her out to maybe do something more than just taking a coffee, (more of a date) (the first time I make the first move) Since I felt that she may be the real deal and makes me feel really good when I'm with her. What I found out yesterday was that she apparently is going on a date with my bestfriend Today (on Sunday 31st march) and next Friday..
As fast as I thought that maybe I've found a way to actually feel good from the morning to night, imagining me and her drinking coffee during the days having endless convos and actually having a smile on my face everyday. Life comes and destroys everything..
I'm thinking of just asking her out for a coffee again and straight up telling her, it's too bad that ur already busy with someone else, I was actually thinking of asking you out this week but I guess I was a bit late because I'll get deeply hurt seeing my bestfriend and my dream girl dating or being together with hopes that maybe one day I'll have a chance with her.
Fellow Redditors what should I do? Giving up is not an option :/
TL;DR: I love this girl that I started to get close to and was thinking of asking her out next week but yesterday I found out that she's going on 2 dates with my bestfriend.. hurts my feeling alot. I'm asking for ur help to tell me what I should do about the situation.

2019.02.22 03:36 MrsPottyMouth Do I continue?

My Med Surg I class has three exams. I've taken the first two and failed both...one by 6 points, one by 4 1/2 points. The instructor emailed all the students (almost a third of the class, from what I've been able to find out) that had a failing average on the exams to set up one-on-one meetings to discuss our options...one of the options being dropping the class. The final drop date is next week and the last exam is in three weeks. I just don't know what to do. An upperclass friend said a lot of people in her Med Surg I class were at the same spot at this time but nearly everyone pulled through and passed. I've been studying my tail off for the last exam but I can only miss eight questions to get the grade I need to get a passing exam average and pass the class. I'm getting good marks in clinicals, I passed my skills check offs and passed all my assignments (they're either "completed/passed" or "not completed/failed"). But that really doesn't matter, if you don't end up with an exam average of 78 you fail the class. I don't know if I should even try to pass the last exam or just drop the class and try again next semester.

2019.02.16 00:19 ocarina_of_time8 Rating Each Worlds (Spoilers)

Having played since first release, i think i know (in my mind) what is KH quality when it comes to worlds but here goes my personal opinion on the additions to KH3.
Mount Olympus
Personally i thought this was a nice entry in to the game, having been hyped about the first world of KH3 since DDD hinting that. Way too big though, although i liked that you can explore cities and travel all the way to Zeus - Story was decent but needed something more. We barely got Hades, didnt even fight him but got 1 crazy fight to start the game vs the titans which was the best part imo - Got way few characters to interact with, Meg barely talked, no Coliseum or arenas, no Auron or new characters, Phil wasnt taunting the gang anymore and just felt all in all lackluster and more Deep Jungle esq - Looked nice though 5/10
Twilight Town
Nice to return to a familiar place, this time with a full plaza of people, felt lively but way too small. A PS4 version of the biggest game yet to date should do better than that, it was like a mobile version of Twilight Town. Need skateboard 4/10
Toy Box
Now like most people, i was super hyped for Toy Story finally arriving in Kingdom Hearts and when arriving in Andy's Room and jumping on the street i felt this was a dream to good to be true. But unfortunately what was shown in trailers was the highlight of the World, once you leave that one area you enter a gigantic mall and that is the whole world.
To me that is super disappointing, especially since Mr Potatohead and many others were missing, the story was just boring and poorly written and in the end they are just stuck in an alternate world and dont seem to care. The worst part was when leaving the mall and being back at the exit, hopefully to enter a new area, i get the message im supposed to go back up there and do some more searching that took another 2 hours of worthless content. This world made Deep Jungle and Wonderland look like upperclass - I could rant more about this world but i'll leave it at that 3/10
Kingdom of Corona
First world i actually liked, was fun gallivanting with Rapunzel and exploring the beautiful area, only bad part she was only a temporary character and im left with only Flynn talking about how handsome he is - Didnt fit lol.
But other than that it was just like watching the movie and taking part in the story, not too bad 7/10
Monstropolis
Now thats my favorite world in the game, especially because how well written it was, actionpacked, funniest and useful party members yet and the pace was great. Loved the Vanitas/Sully scene, probably my favorite in the game but overall really enjoyed this world, music also didnt feel tedious and on loop like the other worlds (Toy Box "shivers") 8/10
Arendelle
I liked the idea of Frozen in the game and was looking forward to having Elsa as a frost mage fighting alongside with me but was very disappointed that opportunity didnt get a chance to shine. But Marshmallow was a nice funny surprise lol but the level design just like Toy Box was very DDD-esque and running up the mountain 3 times was a very tedious chore that i dont wanna do again.
Same music on loop again and mute button is my friend. You follow the Disney plot but the bosses in this world were my favorite in the game with the secret boss. Besides bosses this world was very boring, needed more Olaf 1/10
100 Acre Wood
I absolutely adore Winnie the Pooh in Kingdom Hearts but everyone can agree this version was the worst in the franchise unfortunately, Even CoM a mobile remake did endlessly better in design. Very small area, and 1 mobile (mini) game, that i wouldnt download if i would get paid for it lol, well maybe. Enjoyed seeing Pooh again but it was so short and only 1 visit 2/10
The Caribbean
I enjoyed this world for what it was, exploring islands was fun but endless mandatory pirate ship battles was a chore and everyone can agree nobody wanted to see Pirates of the Caribbean 3 movie again. Had fun exploration though, good underwater battles, decent music, tried something new and was quite exciting imo 6.5/10
San Fransokyo
I had heard big things about things about this world and expected to see something cool but its just a big city that you run up buildings the entire time looking for emblems really, was super bored playing this, couldnt wait to finish, tooK way less time than Toy Box so that was a bonus, story was nonexistent really 3.5/10
The Keyblade Graveyard
The worst part of the game for me, the best part for alot of people. So many things here that i didnt care about, especially the endless nodding but thats a rant i have done before and i dont wanna be too negative 1/10
Conclusion
Personally i loved all the worlds and main storyline in the KH franchise up until DDD which only had the Musketeer World that l loved and this one only had 2-3 worlds i cared about, others were a huge let down but thats my onion.
What is yours ? Honestly i love playing this game though, its really weird. I just love KH and the gameplay is always fun but the worlds need to be alot better to include in Kingdom Hearts. What was insanely lacking was revisiting the worlds like in KH2 and having a decent world map to explore, this one felt clunky and ridiculous, not on par with KH quality.

Also Elsa could've been the villain to start with, then joining the party. So many opportunities for the story instead of playing Let it Go that was absolutely crinchy for everyone playing. 2019.02.05 22:56 amys_world I can’t believe that I almost fell for it!

A couple of weeks ago, as my husband and I were getting ready to end a lovely Sunday and get ready to start another work week, he gets a call from one of his really good friends from New York. Let’s call his friend Joe. My husband and Joe have been friends for years, and he even was a groomsman at our wedding last year. As I looked on to see who was calling this late on a weekend, he answered the phone with a pleasantly surprised look. I say “pleasantly surprised” because we don’t hear from Joe too often. Since Joe and his fiancé moved to New York last year, the phone calls had been less and less. Now keep in mind, as intelligent as my husband is, he doesn’t really like to over analyze and just let’s things happen. Kind of a “go with the flow” kind of a guy, however extremely intuitive.
The phone call seems to be flowing between my husband and Joe, (most of which is Joe talking and my husband getting the occasional “mhm” in). I began to eavesdrop a little since it was clear that Joe was calling with some news. “Was his fiancé pregnant? Had the wedding date changed!” Just normal stuff like that. I was really interested as to what he was saying to my husband, so I patiently waited. After a few minutes of Joe going on and on, my husband finally was able to interject. “Sounds interesting. Let me talk to Amy and I’ll text you shortly to confirm.” “Talk to Amy”? I thought.... Well this should be interesting.
“That was Joe”..... he said with a somewhat positive look on his face. “He said he has recently gotten aquatinted with some people that he thinks will be beneficial for us to meet. Something about a very “lucrative business opportunity.”
“A business opportunity?” I thought. I decided to hear him out, although much to my surprise, my husband didn’t have much to tell me. I asked what Joe was telling him for (what seemed like a solid 10 minutes) and he said, “Joe and his fiancée have been approached with a business opportunity, a somewhat of a “mentorship” opportunity and Joe thinks this could be something we would really be interested in.” Now keep in mind, Joe knows that we sold our house last year and have a little something in our savings account, however my husband is currently affected by the government shutdown, and is open minded about possibilities for a new career.
I was slightly intrigued, however extremely cautious. I looked to my husband only to see the optimistic look on his face. He began to say that Joe invited us to meet some of his “mentors” tomorrow and that he really thinks we shouldn’t pass this up. (Now remember, I have never heard of such a thing as a MLM or pyramid scheme of any kind). So to be supportive to Joe (since he was extremely adamant about us going) my husband and I agreed to attend. We spent the next few minutes giggling and scratching our heads, especially when we mapped out the location of this meet. We were surprised to see how close it was to us, and began to think.. “Who knows, maybe this could be something.”
The next day, as I came home from work, my husband was home and reminded me that we had to be at the meeting at 8 o clock sharp and that Joe had told him to be sure we were dressed in “business casual” attire. After driving an hour to get home in pouring rain, I was dreading getting dressed and getting out again but sucked it up since we had committed to go.
As the 8 PM hour approached, we left our home in a playful mood complimenting each other on our attires. We arrived at the address that Joe had given us only to find that it wasn’t your usual meeting place. You would think it would be an office building or maybe even a restaurant. We found ourselves in front of an apartment building in a mid to upperclass neighborhood in Glendale, California only minutes away from us.
I held my husband’s hand as we walked in, not knowing what we were getting ourselves into. Standing outside was also saw another couple (early to mid twenties). We asked if they were also here for “the meeting” they said they were, however they seemed as uninformed as we were. After about a minute of waiting outside of the door of the building, we were approached by a man who greeted us and invited us into his home. His wife approached us with an ear to ear grin introducing herself and welcoming us in. At this point we were kind of weirded out but things seemed okay so we decided to take a seat, and by seat, I mean in one of the chairs they had lined up in rows in their cozy yet cramped condominium. We found ourselves in the front row eagerly awaiting to find out why we were there.
The lady of the house, offered us water and snacks (and by snacks I mean a few bags of pre bagged almonds). We said we were ok but thanked her graciously. A few moments passed and the room began to fill with about 10-12 people, most of which were couples and fairly young, I would say mostly late twenties. As the group began to talk quietly amongst themselves, all in a similar situation as my husband and myself, I couldn’t help but notice the well dressed man, with the eye piercing colored tie and bright colored handkerchief in his suit pocket sitting in one of the corners of the living room. As the group got quieter, he made his way to the front and sat down. By now I’m scoping the room, in a confused state, observing my surroundings. I couldn’t help but notice the mini drawing board behind (let’s call him suit) “Are we about to get a lesson like we did back in school”. I laughed inside but kept my composure. I noticed that there was a sweet looking young couple, the man was blind but was dressed in a suit, one that looked like it had been in his closet for a little while. I looked down at my phone to check the time and noticed that I had absolutely no cell service, zero bars! I thought, “ This was odd since we were in the city and fairly close to everything”. I didn’t think much of it until later, when my husband would tell me that they had a cell phone jammer in their apartment. Why would an ordinary couple, with their two year old sleeping upstairs, feel the need to have a cell phone jammer in their apartment?! Please keep in mind that we still don’t see any red flags only because my husband and I deal seemingly normal lives, carry a full time job and lead a normal social circle. We have never been exposed to what we were about to witness.
The well, yet colorfully dressed man, let’s call him began to speak: “Welcome everybody, Welcome!” I heard loud clapping and cheering from from what I believe were from people who Suit brought with him. So he begins. “Good evening guys, my name is Pony Tappalardo.” (changed his name to not expose him). In the next hour or so, I’m going to give you some tips on how to be financially free”. “Remember there is a certain type of people who are cut out for this”. He started telling us stories about when he was young, his car was repossessed. He couldn’t pay his rent or bills, (however, bullshit! I later learned later that his parents were diamond executives for decades) and his father had decided to pass the legacy to him. Your millionaire parents couldn’t bail you out when you got evicted and had your car repossessed? Hmm another head scratcher which dawned on me after reading about him and his family. He began by saying that people ask themselves the wrong question. That question is “What do you want to do?” instead of “How do you want to live?” I began to think this was something of some type of motivational speaking and in my naive mind, we were the lucky chosen ones to be here for this “one time” opportunity to hear this successful man give us tips on how to save the money we have, be frugal, and invest smart. “Don’t refinance your home.” “Don’t buy an expensive car.” I thought, “A bit contradictory right since his $150,000 car was parked right outside. Another head scratcher. As he approached the end of his spiel, we were patiently waiting: “Who is this guy?” “What company does he work for?” “How is he retired at 38?” All of which these answers were never answered. We politely mingled a bit and made our way home. On our way out, the “condo owner” asked us to reach out to Joe for the step. I couldn’t help (being so gullible) “ Could this be our way to financial freedom?” “Could we be the chosen ones?”
We went home, even stopped by to grab a bite since we had been sitting there for over two hours with nothing but bottled water.
Fast forward to the day after: I get an Instagram request from Pony Tappalardo. Why would a man making $150-$200 friend request me on Instagram? Hmm, another red flag! He said to reach out the Joe, to get information on the next step. “They only had a few more slots to fill for their mentorship and they didn’t want us to pass it up.”
So the next day, we call Joe (my husband’s friend who invited us to this meeting). Had a number of questions for him, however he was very vague. He said that “We were qualified” and the next step would be to skype his mentor (not Pony) and they would tell us more about the next step. Almost as if Joe didn’t know much about it.
I spent literally 48 hours on the internet read and reading and reading, relentlessly. I learned all about MLMS, period schemes, and read about over 50 organizations (or should I say scams). This comments from people who sucked all of their money, caused for homes to be repossessed. I finally found which organization aka cult this Pony guy belonged to! AMWAY! or better known as SCAMWAY! Literally you can make more panhandling then you can make for Amway. The best sales person (selling detergent, toilet paper was earning 0.01%. That’s 1 tenth of 1%!
My husband was taking a day nap before we had to get ready for this meeting I was dreading. The more I read on it, the more I was sure I wanted nothing to do with it. I gently woke my husband and told him, “Honey I’ve spent hours and hours reading on the company, and it’s a pyramid scheme also known as a SCAM. We unanimously decided to back down (still not knowing what we were getting into) texted Joe and politely said that although we don’t want to persuade them in any way (since he had already had s taste of of the AMWAY kool aid, however it’s just not the right fit for us. Furthermore it felt it just wasn’t ethical. I’m a licensed P&C/Life & Health agent and it would be contradictory for me to get involved in something like this. They wouldn’t take no for an answer! But after a few remarks from my husband, they gave up.
Moral of the story: “NOTHING ever comes free in this world! Don’t ever believe that millions of dollars are going to be handed to you on a silver platter. BEWARE: they prey on couples, preferably young ones, with one having a full time job to pay for (all the books, all the functions and not to mention, flights!) How is this lucrative?! Do yourself and your family a favor, don’t fall for “secret” vague meetings in dark neighborhoods. Watch out for men in cheap suits fishing for customers. Oh and have you ever seen a guy on the freeway riding a junk car wearing a suit? He’s one of them!
Utterly disgusting. Ask me anything, I’ve read 4 books in 4 days. Best one, “Merchants of Deception”

2018.12.12 08:03 Teakilla 2 issues I have with H-Pee Lovecraft.

  1. Every MC is the same, I'm sure there is an exception (maybe?) but literally every main character is a 25-35ish white middle-upperclass guy, who often is fairly well off (doesn't need to work for a living) and has a family fortune or otherwise is some kind of professional like a doctoarcheologist from the USA.
  2. Vocubulary, Lovecraft has a very dated writing style and uses some unfamiliar words which is fine, but he uses the same words over and over, often in the same story which really breaks the immersion.

2018.12.11 21:12 MadisonTW The Good Student - Chapter Eight - MoodyLit

The foreign minister and the ambassador from Gweur, a small country west of Ranvar, had been excitedly agreeing with one another for the last ten minutes. Prince Ranade had lost interest about nine minutes ago.
He frowned at his plate and pushed up a lettuce leaf with his silver fork, hoping to find something more appetising underneath. He was disappointed. As the Crown Prince of Ranvar, he could order the palace chef to bring him any meal he wished. Unfortunately, he didn’t seem to be able to command his wife to stop intercepting those orders. He had agreed to a more healthy diet, but who ate salad for breakfast?
He was forty, only slightly overweight, and next in line to be king. He had been next in line his whole life and seemed no nearer to the throne. Which didn’t mean he had no power. Quite the contrary. He practically ran the country. All decisions came through him, all major policies were drawn up under his instructions. But it was still his father’s signature that was required to put them into effect.
King Ranvar XIV was confined to his bed, as he had been for the last six years. He was weak and near death, but refused to take the final step. Not that the prince wanted to see his father dead. He loved his father and respected him as a king, when he was the king. But he wasn’t any longer, and yet he was.
The reason the king was bedridden had nothing to do with age. At sixty-six, there was plenty of life left to live and plenty of men who functioned perfectly well. But the king had been a mage; a practising one. And supernatural forces exerted strains on the human body.
It hadn’t been proved, not scientifically, although tests had been carried out and many papers had been written. The Arcanum community were just as keen to know the truth about side-effects, and why they affected some and not others. But all the tests came back inconclusive.
Prince Ranade didn’t need evidence. He had seen his father’s deterioration with his own eyes. The tremors came first, then the loss of muscle. And slowly, the dementia. It could have just been nature taking its course. Once you get to a certain age, illness can come in many forms and often for reasons that aren’t understood. But this was not natural. The prince, while not a full mage, had been trained in Arcanum as all the royal family were. He was adept at a few minor skills, one of which was magic sensitivity. He could feel the magic ravaging the insides of his father’s body. And there was nothing he could do about it. There was nothing anyone could do about it.
He had decided to not use his own gifts unless strictly necessary. Far better to allow others more powerful in that area to operate at his behest. Most mages were only too happy to fling magic about and hang the consequences. The prince was only too happy to let them.
The lettuce was crisp and fresh. The tomatoes succulent. The entire salad was beautifully put together and covered in a rich dressing. But it was still a salad.
I will have to have a chat with the Royal chef in private, he thought.
Some of his ancestors had executed their unreasonable spouses, but there were laws now to prevent that sort of thing. Prince Ranade understood better than anyone why they were necessary.
Foreign Minister Kuplas sighed heavily and pinched the bridge of his nose. “If you please, Your Majesty, the situation in Gweur is reaching a tipping point.”
“Yes, of course,” said Prince Ranade, not really sure what situation the foreign minister was referring to. Generally, things were only brought to his attention once all normal channels had been exhausted. “What exactly is the problem?”
Ambassador Adamal snorted air through his impressive moustache and violently crunched on a muffin. The muffin was oozing with butter, the prince couldn’t help but notice.
Minister Kuplas’ mouth formed a flat, grim line across his face. “Forces of darkness, Your Majesty.”
“Don’t be so theatrical, Kuplas,” said the prince a little testily. His true ire was caused by the radishes, elegantly cut into roses, but his melodramatic foreign minister wasn’t helping. “You mean this cult, do you?”
“My apologies, Your Majesty. Yes, but it is less of a cult and more of a group of agitators. Encouraging people to do as they wish and enjoy themselves before the end of days, or beginning of the new order, or something along those lines. It’s hard to tell with these free-spirited types. They want everything and nothing.”
“There is discontent among our people,” said the ambassador through his muffin. “I fear for the future of our beloved nation as a strong independent force for good, and as a loyal friend to the Kingdom of Ranvar.” He continued to feed his grief.
Ranvar and Gweur had a special relationship. One that the Gweur government were very keen to maintain. They knew full well what Ranvar was capable of doing to them if they didn’t.
“Can’t we send over a few more troops to quell the disturbances?” said the prince. It seemed a fairly obvious solution. There were already troops on Gweur soil, by invitation, of course. A few more wouldn’t raise eyebrows.
The foreign minister shook his head. “There are no disturbances to quell. The people are simply refusing to do their work. Factories are empty, fields are untilled. They believe there is more to life. They believe magic can be made available to all.”
Prince Ranade raised a heavy eyebrow. Like his father, his facial hair was red and wiry, even though the hair on his head was blond to the point of being white. “Well, good luck to them on that score. Took me twelve years just to be able to light a candle.”
“Hah!” said Ambassador Adamal. “They not only claim it, they have made demonstrations.”
“Magic outside of Ranvar?” said the prince. “Why was I not informed of this?”
“Parlour tricks, Your Majesty,” said Minister Kuplas. “Or so we thought, until recently. It seems one among them genuinely has the gift. A young woman who does not appear on any register and who has no birth certificate. We believe she is the leader of the movement. We have also learned of women matching her description going back at least two hundred years, possibly more.”
“The same woman?” asked the prince.
“It appears so,” said the foreign minister.
“And what have you done about her?”
“She is currently residing in a cell under the Ministry of Instruction. We thought it best to extract her from Gweur—with the permission of the Gweur government, of course.”
“Good riddance to her,” said the ambassador as he slapped more butter on another muffin.
“And what have you gleaned?” asked the prince, now quite interested. “Where is she from? What power does she possess?”
The foreign minister sighed heavily. “Unfortunately, she has been impervious to reason, and also to pain. We have learned nothing of her true purpose, or nature.”
“This really won’t do. Delcroix, isn’t this the sort of thing you’re supposed to be good at?”
Minister for Instruction Delcroix sat at the other end of the table in front of a salad identical to the prince’s.
“Indeed, Your Majesty. Unfortunately, we suspect the woman isn’t entirely human.”
“What is she then?”
“That’s what we plan to find out. There is an expert arriving today to help us determine exactly what we’re dealing with.”
“An expert? A Ranvarian expert?” asked the prince.
“Yes, Sire. I aim to keep this matter internal.”
“And so you should. Tell me, Delcroix, did my wife force that salad on you?”
Delcroix looked down at the salad. “No, Your Majesty, this was my choice. I haven’t seen the Crown Princess today.”
That hardly makes a difference, thought the prince. I haven’t seen her either, yet here I am, sitting with this leafy monstrosity.
“Kuplas, have a word with the Ministry of War and see if they can spare a troop from the Dragon Corps. The main forces will be deployed along the eastern frontier, but the striplings in training should be available. Have them run some exercises around the Gweur border, maybe even into Gweur airspace, with your permission, of course.” He nodded at the ambassador.
“Of course, of course,” said the ambassador. “That would be very helpful. I will arrange it immediately.” He stood up, bowed, and hastily exited, leaving a half-eaten muffin behind. It would have been unseemly to grab it, the prince decided.
The sight of a dozen dragons running formations in their skies should remind the Gweur population the price of freedom.
“Delcroix, impress on your expert the urgency of this matter. We need to know if there truly is a threat, and from where.”
“Yes, Your Majesty,” said Minister Delcroix. He rose to leave.
“And with regard to your other responsibilities, he is still safely locked away, isn’t he?”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
“You’re sure? You’ve checked?”
“Every hour, Your Majesty.”
“I suppose that’s adequate. Just be careful. I know that’s your stock in trade but he was not easily subdued.”
“I will be extra vigilant, Your Majesty. He will not escape from me again.”
“Yes. It’s the again part that worries me. He is your highest priority. Don’t let little witches be a distraction.”
Lamworth Tenner stood in the hallway of the Ministry of Instruction admiring the painting on the wall. It was of King Ranvar VI who had been responsible for the ministry’s inception. It was also the only painting he had seen where the frame was part of the painting. It looked very much like a real frame, carved with ornate designs, but in fact it was clever use of paint and light. A testament to the ministry’s dedication to convincing people of truths that did not exist.
“Ah, Lamworth, you’re here,” said Delcroix walking towards him down the hall. “I take it my people have briefed you on the sensitive nature of this business.”
“Yes,” said Tenner. “I have to say, Minister, I’m not altogether sure I believe it.”
“Good, that makes two of us. This way.” He led Tenner to a door that looked like it would open into a large office but in fact behind it there was a staircase. “I won’t give you any details, I’d rather you make up your own mind without any influence from me, or anyone else. Just get as much information of any kind out of her.”
“I will do my best,” said Tenner as he followed him down the winding stairs. “If she does turn out to be a demon, I’d be very interested to know how she got here. There hasn’t been a sighting for over a thousand years.”
“Yes, well, judging by the way she keeps popping up in the record, she may very well have been that last sighting.”
After a surprisingly long jaunt down several levels, they came to the bottom and a very well guarded room. Tenner counted ten nervous-looking soldiers in the immediate area, and the sound of more nearby. There were a series of heavy doors with back iron reinforcements along one wall. It would take a great deal of effort to break through them.
Minister Delcroix produced a key. “I won’t accompany you in, I find her rather irritating. I’ll send in a couple of guards with you, but my advice would be to keep your distance.”
“Understood,” said Tenner, already feeling quite excited. He tried his best to keep himself calm. It was very unlikely she was a genuine demon, but even a tangential connection would be worth the trip.
“And try not to think of this as one of your experiments. Think of it more as a matter of national security.” Delcroix opened the door.
“Yes. Will do.” Tenner entered the dark room. Two soldiers followed him in, both carrying lanterns. They immediately went to the two corners either side of the door and stood there like statues, lights held aloft.
The door closed behind them. The key turned in the lock with a thunk.
On the far wall, hands chained up high, wide apart, feet chained low, also wide apart, stood a young woman. She looked like she might be twenty-five. Certainly no more than thirty. She wore a simple smock, white and fairly new. It hung off her like she had been hurriedly dressed and without her participation. The back was untied and the fit was loose.
Her skin was pale but smooth and youthful, covered in dark smudges around her neck and her wrists. It may have been dirt, it may have been the remnants of bruising fast-healed with potent salves. Her lips look dried and cracked and her yellow hair hung lank, hiding most of her face. She seemed to be muttering to herself.
Tenner approached cautiously, his head tilted to try and get a better look under the curtain of greasy hair.
“Ah, hello. It’s Junia, isn’t it? I was told that was your name.” There was no reaction. “My name’s Lamworth. That isn’t my true name, though. My mage name is Dariah.”
She looked up, then. Her eyes were bright and clear and he could see every line, every curve of her face despite the shadows obscuring everything else in the room.
“You give me your name, child?” she asked in a small, feminine voice that matched her face, but her condescending words were incongruous. A mocking smile lifted the corners of her lips. “Are you a fool, or just as tired of life as I?”
Tenner’s heart leapt in his chest. There was something here, something he had been looking for and failed to find. She was far younger than him, or at least it appeared so, but when she spoke, he felt the weight of centuries. His search had been so very long and so very fruitless, could it be his relentless pursuit had finally paid off?
“I give it to you gladly. Perhaps I could have yours in return?” He spoke quietly, with deference, as though speaking to a grandmother from a great family. “If you don’t mind.”
“My name, my name...” Her head fell forward again so she spoke to the floor. “It has been so long, so many years playing at life, waking each morning and putting on sweet little Junia like putting on this shapeless smock, both equally as unfitting. And then walking and talking and eating and shitting. And then sleeping and rising and repeating it all. My name? You desire to know my name? It will do you no good, little wizard. What use is a name when the thing it names is no more potent than dust?”
“I do not wish to use it against you, only to address you correctly. It is a joy and a pleasure to meet you, Old Mother.”
Her head snapped up and one eye rose at a slant. “Joy? What do you people know of joy? I have travelled all over this rock of yours and I have seen the great cities and the wild places. The dark men who fight naked in the far deserts until they fall weeping to the ground, bloodied and broken. The genteel ladies who dress like colourful birds and peck at each other like dull, grey pigeons. Your world is full of beauty none of you has seen, and enormous ugliness you place on pedestals and worship like gods. You are worms still wriggling in the earth. You have yet to experience joy.”
“I wish I could see through your eyes,” said Tenner sincerely. “Long have I wished to see the truth of this world.”
“Is that what you wish, child? I don’t believe you would like what you see. The truth of the world is that it is a giant nursery where babes squabble over toys. There is little worth seeing, and nothing more than once. I closed that door a long time ago, when I realised the view through it was no more substantial than a picture in a book; and with the same purpose. To be looked at and then forgotten, shadows to remind you of something no longer within reach.
“It is another door I wish to open, one that refuses to open even a crack. That door is far more appealing, but heavy and firmly shut. Why won’t it open? Why have I been barred entrance? Why?”
Her head lolled from side to side in despair.
Tenner leaned forward, his cheek almost touching hers. “Tell me about this door,” he said with great passion. “If I can help you open it, I will. Perhaps together we can find the key.”
“Hah!” cried out the girl. “There is no key. There is no need for one. The door swings open with the slightest push, or so it should. Junia is on the other side. Junia is holding the door in place against me. Too long have I worn her like a skein wrapped around me and forgotten what it is to be free. I shall lie down like a sick dog and never get up. I accept my fate.”
“No!” cried out Tenner, startling the guards and making them shift about uncomfortably. He lowered his voice again. “Old Mother, do not give up, yet. I can help you.”
“Help me?” She laughed, but her throat was dry and the sounds that emerged were broken and half formed. “What can the wizardling do that I cannot? What power do you possess when up is down and down is up?”
He felt the shift in the world, the power in her words rearranging existence. The guards behind him exclaimed in surprise as they fell upwards towards the ceiling, crashing loudly as though having dropped from a great height.
Tenner willed himself to refuse the call. He denied what seemed so obviously true. Down was not up, no matter how incontrovertible it seemed. He broke out into a sweat, his entire body aflame under the skin as if from a fever.
“You fight the truth, child,” she said, perhaps a little impressed. “You struggle well, for a human. But you struggle for nought.”
“Do not lose faith, Old Mother,” said Tenner through shaking lips. His body rattled like it was being broken from within, but still he refused to believe. His own faith was being tested to its limits, the effort soaking him in sweat, the strain spreading through him until every muscle stood out. There was thunder in his ears and it sounded like Death’s footsteps running towards him. “As long the door exists, it can be opened.”
The world stilled, or at least it felt so to Tenner. There were two loud thumps as the guards landed on the ground, still and lifeless. Their bodies were unmarked and their faces held expressions of great confusion. Tenner breathed easily again, his chest rising and falling to quickly regain the air it had lost. He took out a handkerchief and wiped the sheen off his forehead.
“Perhaps you can help this old woman, Lamworth.”
Tenner looked up, dabbing his face with the handkerchief. Her appearance had become even more youthful, even more beautiful. She did not seem to be hanging from the wall, it was more like the wall was an ornament she wore.
“I think I can,” he said, “ but I will need you to do something for me first.”
She smiled mockingly again. “And what favour do you wish me to grant?”
Tenner folded up the handkerchief and put it away. “I need you to die.”
Prince Ranade was very angry. He was sitting at the dinner table facing yet another salad. He had spoken to the chef, privately, and made it very clear how he expected the evening meal to proceed. He had taken into account his wife’s interference, and arranged for a decoy salad to be prepared. The genuine repast would be delivered by means of stealth and subterfuge. The finest agents of the Secret Service were placed at the chef’s disposal to ensure the prompt and successful delivery of the real meal, codename Silver Spoon. And yet, the only thing to arrive was the salad. Had his wife infiltrated the Secret Service? It had never been achieved before, but he wouldn’t put it past her.
What was the point of being the most powerful man in Ranvar if he couldn’t even order himself a steak when he wanted? Were the rest of his edicts followed with equal incompetence?
“In the afternoon, Your Majesty will be hosting a garden party for—”
“Will there be a buffet, Monfoth?” he asked his aide.
Monfoth was technically aide to the king, but since the king was incapacitated, he provided the same service—a tight schedule planned well in advance—to the Prince Regent. He was nearly eighty and wished dearly to retire to his cottage in the country. It had been awarded to him on his sixtieth birthday and he had visited it only twice since then.
“I believe so, my liege. The Princess has taken care of arrangements.”
Ranade’s heart sank. “Carry on, what else?”
Monfoth went over his notes, trying to find his place. “Oh, there is one other thing. Your brother asked for an audience.”
“My brother? Which one?”
“Leovek, my liege.”
“Leovek? What does that runt want? Shouldn’t he be at school?”
“Yes, my liege. He is in the upperclass at Ransom. It seems he got himself into an… awkward situation. The Ranvar protocol was enacted.”
Prince Ranade nearly choked on a slice of beetroot. “What?” he roared, once he’d cleared his throat. “How did the little twerp do that? When was the last time it was even used?”
“A hundred and forty seven years ago, my liege.”
The Ranvar protocol gave the Secret Service the right to incapacitate a member of the Royal household, but only when it pertained to their safety in the face of a sudden and immediate danger. Too often, a prince or princess would panic or refuse to do as they were told, believing their position too lofty to be truly under threat. They were considered a danger to themselves and subdued in a swift and painless manner, to be revived once they had been carried clear.
“And it was a justified use of the protocol, was it?” he asked the aide.
“An investigation is underway, but yes, I believe it was justified. It involved the girl.”
“The girl? What girl?”
“The Van Dastan girl,” said Monfoth. “Apparently he insulted her and she didn’t take kindly to it.”
Ranade rolled his eyes. “I’m surprised she didn’t kill him on the spot. Is she… upset?”
“I don’t believe so. Reports suggest her reaction was quite measured. She treated it as a minor nuisance.”
“Ha! That about sums up the little twerp. Send him a letter telling him to stop acting like a whiney runt or I’ll send a group of Instructors down to that school and have him publicly flogged.”
“I’m afraid you can’t do that. Not since the Agvarian Act of—”
“Yes, yes, I am fully aware of the limitations placed on me by that infernal act, but he isn’t. That girl has done more for the kingdom than he ever will. Make sure he understands she is to be left alone. And make sure the Secret Service understand it, too. If she wants a normal school life, she’s going to get it, fifth prince be damned. That’s all for now.”
“I’ll see to it at once, my liege.” Monfoth bowed and backed out of the room.
“Now, Delcroix, what have you got for me.”
Minister Delcroix, who had been waiting patiently by the door, stepped forward.
“If I may, Your Majesty, I’d liked to introduce Lamworth Tenner.”
Tenner also stepped forward and bowed. “It is an honour, Your Majesty.”
“Yes, I’m sure it is. You can dispense with the formalities. Is this the expert you spoke of?”
“It is, Your Majesty,” said Delcroix. “Our foremost expert in the field of demonology.”
“And what of the woman you apprehended? Did she reveal herself to you, Tenner?”
“Ah, yes, in a manner of speaking. I believe she was a demon.”
“Was? What do you mean was?”
“The subject died a few hours ago,” said Delcroix. “Took her own life.”
“Why the hell would she do that?” said the prince.
Delcroix looked at Tenner who cleared his throat.
“From what I could piece together, her actions in Gweur were designed to attract our attention. She wanted to be caught. I believe she had been left behind when the gate to the Other Place closed—I’m not sure why, an oversight perhaps—and living disguised as a human for hundreds of years had left her sapped of her strength. Her mind, too, had become unstable. She wished to end her suffering, and needed a strong source of magic to do it. The Ministry of Instruction houses most of the relics from the dark times, I believe the arcanum field they produce was enough to allow her a way out.”
“Hmph,” said the prince. “So there’s no imminent invasion from the Other Place?”
“No, Your Majesty. Not to my knowledge.”
“It would be very inconvenient to have to fight a demonic war right now.”
“She gave no indication that was going to happen. She was rather a sad figure, I found. Terribly lonely.”
“And you’re sure she’s dead. Actually dead, dead.”
“Oh yes, although… with your indulgence, I would very much like to take the body back to my research facility. I think there is much we can learn from even an empty vessel.”
“And where is this research facility?”
“Mr Tenner is a teacher at the Ransom School,” said Delcroix.
Prince Ranade looked at Tenner with renewed interest. “I see. So you’ll know my younger brother.”
“Prince Leovek? Certainly. I teach him first year Arcanum.”
“And how would you rate him, as a student?”
Tenner took a moment to consider. “Unremarkable, Your Majesty.”
“Ha! Seems you have a good eye. Take the corpse, but I want a full report on what you find. Delcroix, I expect you to keep abreast of this and any other developments. If there is something more here than meets the eye, I don’t want to be taken unawares.”
“You can count on me, Your Majesty.”
Both men bowed and left. Prince Ranade sat alone with his salad, formulating a new plan. Operation Cheese Sandwich.
It was already dark by the time Tenner’s carriage was ready.
“You’ll find your package inside,” said Delcroix. “I don’t suppose you’ll mind sharing the journey with it sat opposite you.”
“Certainly not,” said Tenner. “I can’t thank you enough, Minister. This has been the most rewarding experience of my career as a demonologist to date. Many of my colleagues believe me to be a crackpot.”
“Really? I can’t imagine why.” Delcroix smiled, grimly. “Don’t get too carried away. This may just be a random encounter with an entity out of time, but there could be more to it. I expect you to contact me the moment you discover something, no matter how trivial.”
“You will be the first to know, I guarantee it.”
The men shook hands and nodded stiffly at one another, and then Tenner climbed into the carriage. The other occupant was dressed like a lady of means, a black lace dress and a large hat hiding her face behind a veil. Closer inspection revealed black bandages wrapped around her torso to keep everything together for ease of transport. Arms and legs wrapped up made her much more convenient to carry.
Tenner knocked on the carriage roof with his cane and the driver snapped the reins. The carriage and rider both belonged to the Ministry of Instruction, which meant a smooth, uninterrupted journey back to Ransom. Once the city lights faded away, Tenner watched the darkness outside the window, a smile on his lips as he looked forward to taking his prize home and unwrapping it.
There was a sudden, terrible gasp and his companion’s eyes flew open. “What is this?” she hissed. “Why am I bound?”
“For your own protection, Old Mother. You need only bear it a little longer. Once we reach our destination, you will be freer than you have been in a long time, I promise you.”
This seemed to mollify her, leaving her content to breathe deeply, filling her emptied lungs. Eventually, her breathing calmed.
“So, we begin our journey,” she said. “The four of us.”
“Four?” said Tenner. “But we are only two.”
“And the man above.”
“The driver? He makes three.”
“And the one below.”
Tenner felt a chill go through him. He raised his cane and knocked on the roof. The carriage slowed, and then stopped. He opened the door and jumped out, ignoring the driver’s questioning look. They were in the middle of the highway with only trees on either side.
Tenner bent down and looked under the carriage. It was too dark to see clearly. He stuck out his cane, said a few ancient words under his breath, and the tip of the cane glowed a brilliant white. He jabbed it under the carriage.
There was a grating squeal, like a piston in dire need of oiling, and a dark shape shot out. Its form was hard to make out but it was as large as a man. It flew past him and the rush of air pushed Tenner back, but he managed to reach out and grab part of it.
There was a tearing sound and another squeal, but the apparition escaped into the night sky. Tenner looked at the torn fragment in his fist. It looked like black material from an ordinary cape. He took out his handkerchief, opened it up and placed the torn cloth inside. Then he wrapped it up and put it back in his pocket. He had ways to determine exactly what he had encountered.
He looked up at the driver who was resolutely staring ahead. Tenner climbed back in and gave the signal to keep going. The rest of the journey proved uneventful, his fellow passenger remaining silent. When they reached the school, the gates opened without questions, as all gates did for vehicles bearing the Ministry’s emblem.
The driver had been told where to go and took the carriage around the library to the Pagoda. It stood dark and foreboding, a silhouette against the night sky. Tenner disembarked and unlocked the large door while the driver lifted the motionless corpse out of the carriage. He held the door while the large man carried the small woman like she was nothing. But she was far from nothing. Tenner felt a rush of excitement run through him. He looked around and saw a dim glow in one of the library windows.
It was far too late for the librarian to still be at work, and unlike her to leave a lantern unattended, but these were matters that didn’t concern him. There was still plenty of time before dawn, and much work to be done. He entered the Pagoda and closed the door behind him.
